Sudden job loss could improve lifestyle
Once upon a time, my life was hectic. I worked full-time, cared for my family, was involved in community projects and I weighed over 300 pounds.
In October 2001, something unexpected happened. I lost my job.
Among other things, I worried about my weight problem. I thought now that I'd be stuck home all day, I'd be gaining even more. That's not what happened.
I was actually more active and ate better. When I was working, I was paying someone to help clean my house. Now, I couldn't afford that and I had to do it myself. When I worked, we ate out a lot. I ate out for lunch most days as well. There were also drive-through stops on the way to or from work. But now, I was shopping and cooking and eating simpler, more healthful foods at home. The initial reason for the changes was expense; the health aspect was just a side benefit.
By June of 2002, I had lost 50 pounds without making any effort.
If you have been faced with a sudden job loss, perhaps you can use this as an opportunity to begin a more healthful lifestyle?
You now have time to meal-plan. When you plan your meals, you know what to put on the shopping list. When you stick to the list you save money. There is also time to clip coupons and review the sale ads. The coupons and ads can help you with ideas for meals.
You have time for some exercise. You don't need a gym membership or equipment. Experts agree that you keep your regular sleep schedule. So, make your workout your reason to get out of bed in the morning. Take a walk; borrow a video from the local library. The exercise will help clear your head first thing in the morning and also relieve stress.
When you get back to work, you will be used to a more healthful lifestyle and be more likely to maintain it.
