Give technology a good workout

I received an iPod Touch for Mother's Day.  Initially, I wanted it to keep me entertained at the gym when my workout buddy couldn't be there, but I have found many other great uses.  There are numerous applications (many free) that you can get to assist with workouts and weight loss.  Two that I have been using are:  Lose It!, which looks up and tracks calories and exercise, and BodyFitness, which lists and demos different weight workouts.

There are many other ways in which we can use technology to assist us in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

The Internet is a great tool.  I have been logging my food at FitDay.com for years.  The site is free to use online and you can also download a PC version for a nominal fee.  FitDay.com is indispensible to me.  I also use the internet to look up menus before going to restaurants so that I can check the nutritionals and plan my meal.

You can also use a laptop computer as a traveling gym.  We take a workout DVD with us and I can play it in the hotel room.  It's private and convenient.  You can also download workout videos to your iPod to use when traveling.

The Nintendo Wii is a fun way to use technology to stay active.  We don't have one, but I've used it at friends' homes.  In addition to great programs for keeping your body fit, there are also fun games for exercising your brain as well.

If you have digital cable service, there are on-demand programs that include health and wellness programming such as healthy eating and exercise programs.

Technology has long been blamed for making us lazy.  Now we can learn to use it to help us stay active.
