Holiday havoc for diet

Some of the most tempting things this time of year are those tasty homemade treats.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind about those special treats.

Most homemade stuff tastes better than store-bought because it contains more sugar, butter, etc.  This means that whatever you think the calorie count might be, you'd better double it.  Then take a walk.

Before you take the first bite, be sure it's worth it.  After you do the calorie estimate, remember that it takes about half an hour on the treadmill to burn 100 calories.  Now, is it still worth it?  Remember, even if it didn't taste that good, the calories will still count.  Life can be unfair, but it works better if you know the rules.

Whenever you are at parties, do your best to purposely position yourself as far from the food as possible.  Don't arrive hungry and do bring a dish that is, if not light in calories, at least less calorie dense than most.

Unless you have a special relationship with eggnog, I'd suggest getting your calories from the food, not the beverages.  If you want alcohol, go for light beer or use diet soda as your mixer.  And if you do decide to imbibe, ask a trusted loved one to help keep you away from the snack table once you get to feeling tipsy and less inhibited about the calories.  I know I can always depend on my husband for that.  I just let him know my intent ahead of time and he's very good at gently reminding me not to overdo it.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself and your family.  Please be safe and have a wonderful Christmas.
